[ltp] Crash during PXE boot on X40

I'm trying to install Fedora Core 2 on my ThinkPad X40 using the
pxelinux from syslinux 2.11. It crashes during the early steps.

On the X40 I see:

  CLIENT MAC ADDR: ...
CLIENT IP: 192.168.0.248 # yep, correct
GATEWAY IP: 192.168.0.254 # ok too
  TFTP.
  PXE-T02: Access Violation
PXE-E3C: TFTP Error - Access Violation

Now two interesting pieces of information.

Firstly I have tested my pxe setup with another laptop (an old
Toshiba Satellite 4600), and it works fine.

Secondly, I have already installed Fedora Core 1 on that X40 via
PXE. It worked back then. The server was not the same
however. In fact it was the Satellite. Unfortunately that one has been
reconfigured as a Windows machine (for girlfriend, doh!) and I don't
have an image of its disk any longer, so I can't tell the exact
differences between the current and the old config. Except that it was
not syslinux 2.11 because that release came out in August and the
successful Core 1 installation dates back to June I think.

Here is the content of my /tftpboot directory:

  [jll@toots tftpboot]$ ll -Rt
  .:

  drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Sep 22 14:41 pxelinux.cfg

  -rw-r--r-- 2 root root 1054720 Dec 18 2001 kernel

  ./pxelinux.cfg:
  total 8
  -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 104 Sep 22 14:41 default
  -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 71 Sep 22 13:59 default~

  ./syslinux.cfg:
  total 0

  ./lts: (omitted)

...and my pxelinux.cfg/default:

  default lanlinux
  prompt 1
  label lanlinux
    kernel vmlinuz
    append load initrd=initrd.img devfs=nomount

Any help will be appreciated.
