Look through the acpi scripts that numerous people have posted on this 
mailing list and the modules that need to be unloaded and reloaded will 
be more than obvious.

If you took the time to investigate, you would have noticed that the 
kernel I quoted in my original post was also not a 
"distribution-supplied" kernel.

Spend the few minutes looking through the archives of this mailing list 
and you will find all the information you need. (I did).

Just because your apm worked flawlessly doesnt mean it always did with 
IBM laptops. We have had to go through a number of trials and 
tribulations before apm works as well as it does now (find the posts 
from 1997 to see all the problmes with apm then). ACPI obviously offers 
a number of advantages over apm or a number of us would not have 
switched. However, dont expect everything to work flawlessly as it has 
ways to go before it can be considered flawless.
