I actually called the number he says can be reached for "urgent issues"
at 5pm EDT and got his voice mail. I explained what's going on and asked
him to please turn off his auto reply or unsubscribe for the time being.

Guess he doesn't check that "urgent" line all that often ;)

Is there someone who moderates or administers this list who can
unsubscribe him for us before we all go crazy?

I'd also be intrigued to know what email client he's using- most will
only reply to the same email address once in every 24 hours to stop
situations just such as this (as evidenced by the occasional "out of
office" we get from soemone at IBM who's name escapes me- you'll notice
that that is only once per day not in reply to every message!).
