The original script posted to this list also worked for AC, with more
conservative temperature limits (easily adjustable in the script) and
was more complex than the two on the Wiki - all you need to do in the
script is consult /proc/acpi/ac_adapter/AC/state.  Should be in the
archives.  It was called ibm_manage_fan.sh.

R-series thinkpads may have louder fans - I know a lot of people
express annoyance at them - but my T40 fan is near silent in a room
with some quiet activity in to me, and not annoying at all, even though
always on without the above script.  In complete bird-tweety silence,
I might use the script, but my fan's so quiet I don't normally notice.
Some people have expressed annoyance over R-series fans, so I can
only assume they're louder on some models.
