First of, I fully agree with an earlier post saying that there is no
"best distro", it's a matter of taste and personal preferences. I'm just
surprised that noone (afaik) has mentioned Slackware?! I'm running
Slackware-current with kernel 2.6.12.5 perfectly on my recently obtained
T41. ACPI runs smooth with ibm-acpi v.0.11, only thing lacking now is
suspend to disk, but I haven't given that a try yet. I also should note
that I don't have Wifi nor Bluetooth so I can't report on that.

I could go on on why I think it's a good distro and all, but I think
that's already written all over the web and easily found with Google.
Only thing to mention is that the old dogma that it's difficult to
install is complete ridicule.
