You _can_ have a usable system fairly quickly. X will be the longest build,
but you can get fluxbox with Firefox (good for 80% of most peoples needs)
in short order. Then you can build KDE, OpenOffice, GIMP, and the like at
your liesure.

P.S. Gentoo for almost three years, most recently on an R50p

Quoting Jim Redmond <jim@scrubnugget.com>:
> I'm running Gentoo on a T23, and have no problems now that the system is
> compiled. The one possible drawback to installing Gentoo on there is
> that I had to find some other way to entertain myself while it built the
> system (about a day and a half for the basic stuff and another 12-18
> hours for KDE).
