Try the s3_bios kernel boot parameter (see other postings).
Are you using ATI's fglrx driver with activated DRI?
If so, try without DRI, then try the open source radeon driver...
Then, console framebuffer things come to my mind. Try to change whatever
your using there (radeonfb, vesafb)...
