Thanks for the tip. I found the following web-based app useful too 
http://xtiming.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/xtiming.pl. After adding the 
modeline to the "Monitor" section and to the Modes line in the Subsection 
"Display" of Section "Screen" the behavior didn't change- still defaulting to 
the larger display of the unattached, external monitor.  Looking over the XOrg 
logs it looks like this is just a matter of getting my horizontal and 
vertical refresh rates setup correctly.  The hard part about setting up the 
modelines, it seems, is getting some decent specs for your monitor.  I'm 
still searching; IBM's specs weren't helpful enough.

In the meantime, I've setup my thinkpad key to toggle between the sizes I've 
got setup, so switching to 1024x768 isn't that painful.. :)
