Thanks Wes.  What are the lines in your modules.conf (or modprobe.conf) 
for the sound driver.

If you are using a 2.6.10.x kernel, the distro should not matter.  The 
change from modules.conf to modprobe.conf occurred (from what I gather) 
was when 2.6 was released.
