I have a 1.4GHz R40 and probably average 4 hrs on battery, though I've
seen 5.  I use cpufreqd, which sounds like it does the same thing as
your ondemand governor -- it switches between 1.4GHz and 600MHz as
needed.  I'm using ACPI as well.  S3 suspend doesn't last long due to
some Radeon driver bug or something, so I use swsusp.

The only other thing I'd have to recommend is to compile laptop-mode
into your kernel and install Debian's laptop-mode package.  This will
make it easier for the notebook to spin down the harddrive while not in
use.

I also try to keep my LCD brightness turned down, though I'm not sure
how much that really affects power drain.

For the wireless card, check out the drivers at http://ipw2100.sf.net/.
They work great, and are pretty easy to install.
