Hard drive failling to signal "I'm here" but nonetheless working fine?

I had a similar problem with my R40e until I changed the DMA settings. I use
SuSE 9.2, so I'm not sure where were on Mandrake it would be (linuxconf?).
Set it for UDMA = 4.  It worked for me.  HTH
