With kernel 2.6, you use the module-init-tools package, which looks for
module options in files localed in /etc/modprobe.d (see man modprobe).

Before kernel 2.6, update-modules was used to collect all contents of
files (e.g. in /etc/modutils on Debian) and build a modules.conf file,
because the old modprobe only looked in modules.conf. That's why your
manpage says that update-modules is obsolete if you use kernel 2.6 and
module-init-tools.
