I can confirm this on my R40, with current Debian unstable, when
hooking to a couple of different projectors and also external
monitors.

My workaround was to configure an extra display in XF86Config-4 and
use that.  The problem is that you have to restart X (someone posted a
really nice-looking solution a while back)
