[ltp] Screen expansion. Want to avoid.

Some time ago I was complaining that when in gnome I changed my T40 LCD 
screen resoltuion from it's native 1400x1050 to something smaller, the 
fonts where not very crisp.

I have misled myself anf this list (sorry) stating that "screen 
expansion" was off.

This is true in the BIOS but now that my brain started working agagin I 
realize that even when I go to 800x600, all the LCD pixels remain lit 
and no black border shows around.

WinXP on the same machine "obeys" the BIOS settings.

What should I change in my X config or elsewhere to avoid the "screen 
expansion" ?
