This was what I got with unpatched thinkpad-5.8-3 in Debian Sarge, now
using a shiny new Sid 2.6.10-4 kernel. Same as I got under Slackware
and 2.6.9.

Progress! But not there yet ...

$ sudo modprobe thinkpad
Jan 21 13:54:43 mv kernel: thinkpad: I have registered to handle major: 10 minor: 170.
Jan 21 13:54:43 mv udev[7738]: creating device node '/dev/thinkpad'

$ tpctl -rx
Jan 21 13:54:48 mv kernel: superio: Super I/O chip (non-virgin) in plug-n-play mode found at port base 0x2e. :-)
Jan 21 13:54:48 mv modprobe: FATAL: Error inserting thinkpadpm (/lib/modules/2.6.10/thinkpad/thinkpadpm.ko): No such device
Jan 21 13:54:48 mv kernel: thinkpadpm: Power management not active. :-(

I think this is a udev issue, but I don't know what to do about it.
/dev/thinkpad is a device node (C, 10, 170), and not a directory.
