Isn't that settable in xorg.conf ?

I.e. with this in xorg.conf

Section "Device"
        Identifier "Videocard0"
        Driver "radeon"
        VendorName "Videocard vendor"
        BoardName "ATI Radeon Mobility M6"
        Option "AGPMode" "2"

dmesg gives

agpgart: Putting AGP V2 device at 0000:00:00.0 into 2x mode

I think 1x is the default if you don't specify anything else.
