Check "glxgears -info" output for something like that

GL_VERSION    = 1.3.4769 (X4.3.0-8.8.25)
GL_VENDOR     = ATI Technologies Inc.

to be sure that you are using gl.

But even if you are using gl the cpu might be busy too.
