Hi Dirk --

I too had this problem.  Here's a few tips:

You need Windows to update the BIOS.  DOS (FreeDOS or MS-DOS) will
*not* do the trick, as the BIOS updaters are win32 binaries.
I haven't tried, but I'd doubt WINE will be up to scratch either ;)

Windows XP (at least the one that IBM had installed, and the
build that the recovery disks install) couldn't run the updater
to completion.  So I would suggest not even worrying about that.

Windows 98 (an old copy I had around), however, worked great ;)

I had no floppy either -- nor would it have helped, given the
lack of a version of windows that'll fit on a floppy.
So I wound up repartitioning to add a small partition at
the start of the disk, installing the smallest possible win98
configuration, and using that to run the updater.

now, it may be possible to get win98 to run from a CD -- I've never
tried that...
