you're about to start quite a discussion.

I think that ubuntu (free -- from ubuntu.com) is a great "newbie" distro
(and power user, actually.) It is based on debian and as a result has a
wonderfully mature package management system that makes it very easy to
install new packages. They also have good documentation both on
ubuntu.com and ubuntuguide.org. if you know anything about IRC chat,
then you can go to irc.freenode.net room #ubuntu to get help from other
users. 

I have been using linux exclusively since 1997. in about 2002 i
converted my parents (who i'm still the tech guy for) to debian. they
used it but dual-booted. when i installed ubuntu they stopped using
windows. that's saying a lot.

i wish you luck. if you do end up with a debian-based distro, I'll be
happy to answer any questions you have.
