Partly, it depends for how long you plan to remain a "newbie". Some Linux
distributions, like Debian, are great for experts to tinker with. Some
Linux distributions, like RedHat, are great at making first-install fairly
easy and painless. Ubuntu's probably on its way to doing well on both
those criteria. Really, it's partly a function of if you will be working
to understand what goes on under the hood, or if you will be happy to have
the distribution's friendly tools make things work mostly-okay for you.
You can certainly do worse than seeing which Linux distributions' user
bases are growing the fastest.
