For what it's worth.
The DVD with the current Linux-Magazine[1] is Fedora Core-4 and last month's 
was Xandros. RedHat and Debian derivatives respectively. This might be an 
economical and convenient way to get the software.

I run Gentoo[2] which has by far the best documentation and online support of 
any Linux distribution.
