Following up my own message here... unsure if anyone's still
interested in this. Concerning IBM's Battery Rundown recondition
thing:

Well, the results weren't quite as promising as expected. After a
recharge, /proc/acpi still shows:

design capacity: 47520 mWh
last full capacity: 18240 mWh

The rundown lasted 52 minutes until the warning and critical
("nee-nah") battery rundown, and 83 until it actually shutdown.
Using my battery from a full charge (all night), with wireless up and
being used, and screen brightness at something like two notches below
max, the battery started flashing at 70 minutes. It's unclear to me
whether it would have actually carried on happily for another 30
minutes as per the Rundown, but I didn't want to risk file system
corruption.

I wish I'd tested battery life properly before performing the
rundown. 80 minutes doesn't seem to be as bad as I used to be
getting, but I can't be sure. I'd welcome others' results if they do
the Battery Rundown.
