I think your x20 uses an Intel BX chipset (check with lspci). This
chipset only supports modules with 128 mbit chips. Newer and cheaper
256 MB modules have larger chips, but those can not be used with the
full capacity because of the limited address lines of the BX chipset.

Modules which will work with the x20 are more expensive and not so
common.
