I'm struggling to see a digital camera, having the same issues pouncer
had in this post:
http://www.livejournal.com/community/gentoo/195492.html?view=1658276#t1658276
except that I don't even know what 'ub' is.

'lsmod' shows usb_storage loaded. 'lsscsi' shows nothing. Here's some
info: from
  cat proc/bus/usb/devices :

T: Bus=02 Lev=01 Prnt=01 Port=01 Cnt=01 Dev#= 8 Spd=12 MxCh= 0
D: Ver= 1.10 Cls=00(>ifc ) Sub=00 Prot=00 MxPS=32 #Cfgs= 1
P: Vendor=04a9 ProdID=30bb Rev= 0.01
S: Manufacturer=Canon Inc.
S: Product=Canon Digital Camera
C:* #Ifs= 1 Cfg#= 1 Atr=c0 MxPwr=100mA
I: If#= 0 Alt= 0 #EPs= 3 Cls=06(still) Sub=01 Prot=01 Driver=(none)
E: Ad=81(I) Atr=02(Bulk) MxPS= 64 Ivl=0ms
E: Ad=02(O) Atr=02(Bulk) MxPS= 64 Ivl=0ms
E: Ad=83(I) Atr=03(Int.) MxPS= 8 Ivl=96ms

klippie linux # lsmod | grep usb
usb_storage 28544 0
scsi_mod 75232 4 scsi_transport_spi,usb_storage,sg,sd_mod
usbcore 118520 5 usb_storage,ohci_hcd,ehci_hcd,uhci_hcd
