I got it working by putting
agpgart
intel-agp
radeon
in /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6, in that order.

That 'tomatoes' game still gives me a black screen, but 'gltron' plays
fine, and 'glxinfo' now says "direct rendering: Yes".
