First of all, I worry that you may have totally messed up your system
configuration as a result of your conversation with earlier respondents
to your message.  So, please begin by purging all your alsa-* modules;
also remove all changes that you did by hand.  Then reinstall alsa-base,
alsa-utils and an alsa-modules package matching your kernel.  Run

   /etc/init.d/alsa force-reload

Configure xmms to use the EsoundD output plugin if you are using esd,
otherwise the ALSA output plugin.  Does xmms play?  If not, does it play
after you adjust mixer levels using gamix?  If not, please send the
output of:

    lsmod
    uname -a
    cat /proc/asound/version
    cat /proc/asound cards
