[ltp] Using the external VGA on X40

As is widely known there are bugs with the Intel graphics adapter and the
X40. During my first months it annoyed me that the screen moved down
after lid close, then information from this list made me put the
following line in /etc/init.d/acpid

	echo auto_disable > /proc/acpi/ibm/video

Which made the problem go away for a couple of months until now when I
want to use the external VGA to hold a presentation in a few weeks.

Has anyone a clue on how to use an external display without messing up
the screen? When feeding /proc/acpi/ibm/video with any appropriate
string the screen jumps down a cm or two. I've tried starting the X
server after switching to external, but as soon as X boots up it
switches the display back to LCD.

Do you think that I could put anything in the X servers configuration
file to make it work?

In case it matters I'm using Debian/Sarge and updates it daily. (Would
anyone know if anything on this screen issue is at all reported to the
BTS?)
