Yes, it is. The harddisk password has nothing to do with the operating 
systems which runs on the disk. You can configure the ThinkPad BIOS to 
use a power-on password or harddisk password and it'll work because the 
password checks are part of the BIOS which is operating 
system-independent.

There are, however, kinds of "passwords" which don't work with every OS 
on earth: If you install some kind of cryptographic security measures 
to encrypt partitions or the whole disk, it may or may not be supported 
under Linux depending on the product you install.
