I don't have a radeon but I had a similar Problem with my Intel Extreme 
Graphics 2 (i855GM) and could solve it by using vbetool. If you use the 
"official" hibernate-script from http://www.suspend2.net/ for suspending 
you just need to install vbetool and uncomment some lines in 
/etc/hibernate/sleep.conf
