I had this problem too - but not knowing about vbetool, I solved
it by disabling OpenGL support. Is the following true? If so,
it would be worth to change the Wiki accordingly:

* if you have i885GM and restore the video state just
  by cat from and to the PCI device, then:
** if you have GLX enabled, X will not draw everything properly
** if you have GLX disabled, X will behave correctly

* if you use also the vbetool, X will behave good even if you
  use the OpenGL support

Is that true?
