Have you tried alsamixer? its an command line tool.

for more help, more information is needed..

kernelversion? (uname -r)
which Card? (lspci)
is alsa loaded correctly? (cat /proc/asound/devices)
is the oss emulation loaded? (lsmod | grep oss)
is your user in the group audio?
