I don't know exactly how to install it on ubuntu, but it is similar to
debian.

You need th kernel-headers for your kernel. For better use, install the
kernel-source too.

You can't compile something without the sources of the kernel or at
least the headers. Try to install this packages and recompile this.
Ubuntu has a forum or something similar, there you will find an answer,
try to search for ;)

On debian I would do:

apt-get install kernel-headers kernel-source
