It seems your preinstalled system is not the original one. If i were you 
  i'd reinstall from scratch, either from the Recovery Partition/HPA - 
if it still exists - or recovey CDs - if you got them - or a standard 
Windows CD.

If you do the latter, you should take care getting the support files for 
your Win version from the IBM/Lenovo support site, as well as the 
appropriate network driver and the ThinkPad Software installer - and 
save their installation files somewhere else before you kill your 
system. All further drivers and tools will automatically be installed by 
the Software installer (among them the "Access IBM" application, which 
is the onscreen guide you heard of).

It is a Windows application, built around a MM Flash Projector.

Don't know if anyone tried running it under Wine, i guess it's possible.
