Could this actually be a kernel bug?

I'd assumed a network problem, or broken hardware, or just incompetence 
on my part. But....

If so (and the tests so far bear this out), then the eepro100 module 
worked under 2.4, but is partly borked under 2.6.

Can anyone else confirm this? The solution seems to be to load the e100 
module instead.
