You didn't give us much to go on.

What distro are you using?  Are you using a kernel provided by that distros 
maintainers, or rolling your own?

I have seen this happen for distros that use init ramdisks when compiling a 
kernel without one.  Another possibility is a mismatch in the grub script.

Please tell us more.  You are the only one that knows what your situation is.
