The 1280x1024 mode is most likey being thrown out since the internal
LCD doesn't support it.  Since X starts at the highest supported mode,
you can only use xrandr to select smaller modes.  to do what you want,
you'd probably need to mess with the clone option or start X to ouput
to the crt only.  Also check to make sure your video bios supports the
1280x1024 mode.  Since the i810 driver relies on the bios for mode
setting, you are limited to the modes supported by the bios.
