The voltages must be exactly the same.

The current (or power) rating of the adapter must be greater than or 
equal to what your thinkpad requires.

Eg 1. A thinkpad which requires 12V at 4A (= 48Watts), can be run safely
from an adaptor rated 12V,6A.

Eg 2. An adaptor rated 15V, 4A will damage the thinkpad

Eg 2. An adaptor rated at 15V,3A will be overloaded, and overheat.


Beware of non-IBM adaptors, especially cheap, poorly-regulated ones.
