I don't have either of the problems you mentioned. Do you pass
acpi_sleep=s3_bios to your kernel? That solved my video-after-suspend
problem when I first got my x40 (I was using sid then myself.)

I think I solved the usb problem by adding the removal and reinsertion
of the *hci_hcd modules to the /etc/acpi scripts. I don't think my
current setup requires that -- but i don't know if it's because i'm
still using the same scripts or if ubuntu (which tries to support a lot
of different laptops out of the box) has matured their packages to the
state where I don't need to.
