got acceptable results on
thinkpad T60p, opensuse 10.1 (i586)
2.6.17.6, xorg-x11-server-6.9.0-50.17,
ati driver 2.0.5946 (8.27.10)
glxgears runs between 2200 and 3000 fps.

i do not use xgl,
subjective, looking on an kde desktop,
i believe it's a bit slower than 2.0.5814 (8.25.18)

until i changed "Mode" in section DRI to 0777,
google earth ran only as root.
