I have SUSE 10.1 on my R31 and it also works well.

ThinkPads have long been known for working well with Linux (I first
installed Mandrake on a 760EL, back in 1999.). Also, Lenovo is a
Chinese company and China encourages Linux use. Add to that IBM's
strong support of Linux and perhaps Lenovo was encouraged to do the same.

Merging with what ...?

I asked before if there was a list of ThinkPads on which tp_smapi works,
and was directed to <http://thinkwiki.org/wiki/Tp_smapi>,
but I don't see any such list there.

Equally, I don't see any list of ThinkPads on which tpctl works.

Mainline Linux kernel.

Yes, once you're on that page, a secret key combination is needed to
access the list: your <End> key.

Well
I think its very good news that Lenovo will at last bite the bullet and
have the courage to offer a choice
ie Linux and the other !! OS.
 Now my immediate thought is,
how can we linux users support this?
ie how can we let Lenovo know I for one, would be the first to buy a new
Thinkpad IF it had Linux preinstalled.
my answer is who in Lenovo aught to get the 1000.s of emails ? from us
users to say
YES PLEASE
Im out in the sticks but someone might just know to whom we might just
write to say
THE SOONER THE BETTER.

About two months ago I used the feedback button on the
Lenovo website to tell them how I was disappointed with
their dumping Linux support.

This is the reply I got:

I would be happier if they supported Debian and Ubuntu, not only Red Hat,

Hi Jason,

firs don't reply on an other ones message if you don't want to answer to
him. Just write a entirely new message to the list. (

It's okay. I wouldn't consider this question as off topic. You asked how
to get Red Hat/Fedora Core, which is linux and this list is about linux
(and thinkpads), right?

Go here [1] and download the iso. Burn it on a CD with e.g. nero and
boot your thinkpad from this CD. I never tried fedora Core myself but
that's the usual way. And read the documentation on this site!

Hope this helps

Subject: [ltp] What to do if I suspect I've got a lemon T60?
Reply-To: linux-thinkpad@linux-thinkpad.org

Hi folks,

I bought a T60 from PC Connection about a month ago. (Been buying from
them since 1982, never been unhappy with anything.) First thing I did,
natch, was blow away Windows and install FC5. Well, I tried to, that is.

After five or six days and perhaps a dozen attempted installs, I was
never able to get a complete installation to work. Several people on
this list suggested that perhaps the hardware was just a bit too new for
an OS that was delivered last winter.

So then I tried installing Kubuntu 6.06 (Dapper Drake). Four days of
middling success: I got the initial install running, but the networking
never worked, and the machine kept locking up on me, say, during an
update, or when loading the system utilities.

Today I'm trying to install SuSE 10.1, and the damn box has locked up 3
times today. Haven't even gotten past the initial install process.

I'm starting to think that the box itself isn't up to par. And I'm
getting rather angry.

This is my sixth Thinkpad in the last 12 years, so maybe I am due for a
lemon, but before I start screaming, I thought I'd ask. Although I'm not
sure what to ask. :)

- Given Lenovo's recent announcement, I'd sure like to think that 10.1
will run on a T60 'out of the box'. Any feedback?

- Given that I didn't bother to 'keep' my original system OS,
suggestions on how to get the vendor to see if the box is bad?

Thanks,
Whil

I thought the same thing when I tried to install SuSE 10.1 on my t60..
I later realized that the dvd drive I was using to burn all the iso's
was burning them with some corruption apparently.

After I had a friend burn me a good iso, everything went fine...

Good luck, and hopefully its not a lemon :(

1)Try running memtest. leave it overnight - will verify your RAM - and do
a decent job of testing CPU too. Memtest does need at least 24 hours
before you can be confident of a pass, although most failures appear much
sooner than that.
Memtest is available on knoppix.

2)Test it with knoppix - will save loads of installing. Maybe the usual
things "noapic noacpi" etc?

3)Most Installers now have a "verify CD" option. Try it.

HTH - especially since I have a T60p on order :-)

Subject: [ltp] charging rate
Reply-To: linux-thinkpad@linux-thinkpad.org

Hi,

Under Linux, the charge rate of my 9-cell battery goes down rather
dramatically towards the end of the charging procedure (as low as
2000 mW). This completely confuses the gnome battery charging monitor,
as it thinks that it will take forever to finish charging. (Don't know
yet whether this happens with the ultrabay too, since I haven't
had the machine on yet while it was charging the ultrabay battery).

This never happens under Windows though. I just had such a situation
with a slow charge, so I rebooted to windows, which immediately
completed charging to the maximum, then continued to charging the
ultrabay battery, with a proper estimate of the time remaining.

Has anyone seen this behaviour? I do not have the tm_smapi module
loaded, so the battery settings are all at their defaults.

Kasper
