could you try following:

your boot parameter is correct:
acpi_sleep=s3_bios
don`t change this


change /etc/default/acpi-support
the corresponding values to:


SAVE_VBE_STATE=false
POST_VIDEO=false
USE_DPMS=false


just as a try (this made really trouble with my R40, using a default dapper 
install)
