Just a thought - if you are having hardware issues, try using suspend2 
(or maybe it's now called suspend3, or swsusp). I haven't tried it 
myself, but I understand that it is "software suspend", i.e. "Suspend to 
disk, without requiring hardware support", and thus it ought to work on 
any hardware....
