I just upgraded my kernel from 2.6.15 to 2.6.18. (I run stock Debian
kernels.) Whereas formerly, my machine would power off nicely
after
  sudo shutdown -h now
under the new kernel it no longer does so. I tried adding
   apm=on apm=power-off

to the kernel command line, but this did not help.

Any ideas?

In case it's useful, I attach output from dmesg.
