Just for closure: I got another crash running off the Edgy CD so I
went back and tried to recover from the Recovery CDs. The machine
crashed twice, always in the same way, during two successive attempts
to restore it.

Armed with that data, I was able to persuade the repair folks to take
it back. Hopefully they'll find and correct the problem. But I won't
know until after I get back from my holidays :-(
