I'm not sure what to do about the DVD video adapter, but I used to use a 770Z for playing DVDs and I found that Ogle seemed to play them with a lot fewer skips than xine or mplayer.  You could simply dump the DVDs to the hard drive and play them from there.
I assume you've already done the obvious and made sure DMA was on on your DVD drive... :)
