I can not display the same screen with 2 different resolutions because 
of a limitation of the open source ati's driver in xorg 6.8.
If you use ATI's proprietary drivers - which I really don't want to use 
-, the driver is not the same and it's behaviour is totally different. 
So I really can't help you with that.
AFAIK, the OS ati driver that comes with xorg 7 will be able to deal 
with the "2 displays, 2 resolutions, same screen" problem.
Large desktop is perfectly supported already with xorg 6.8, using xinerama.
