The IBM 31P9701 Wireless LAN Mini PCI Adapter (11 a/b/g), reporting
itself as "Atheros Communications, Inc. AR5212 802.11abg NIC (rev 01)",
works well in my R40 (2681). After a couple of years it went a bit funny
but re-seating the card fixed the problem.
