[ltp] Linux for old Thinkpads: Slackware? Vector? Zenwalk? Something else?

Hi,

(I already posted this, but since it didn't show up for almost 24 hours, I
presume the mail got lost. If it shows up twice for others, I apologize.
Happy New Year, everybody!)

I'd like to install Linux on two old Thinkpads (760XL/P166MMX/104MB and
390E/probably PII-300/128 or 192 MB) and thought a Slackware-based distro
would be the best (only?) place to start. But which one? Genuine Slackware,
Vector, Zenwalk are only examples.
Because I don't feel like trying a dozen or so distros, I ask you for your
opinions which is the best for really slow hardware. If not Slackware, which
are other alternatives? It has to be installable to a hard drive (this rules
out Slax) and should reside in its own partition.
I'm currently running Vector 4.3 on my 600E (366 MHz/224 MB), which is
actually the only distro I ever installed successfully and speed is usable.
In the last thread here some preferred Debian for a 760XD, which I'm afraid
will be slower than anything Slackware-derived (this also applies to
Knoppix, Ubuntu etc.).
I know that window managers/desktop environments play a big role, but that's
not part of my question.

BTW: I can't find a way to search this list, isn't there any? So If this a
FAQ, I'm sorry.

Regards,
Alex
