have you tried xorg 6.9/7.0/cvs?  there were some problems with the
dynamic clocks code that I fixed after the 6.8.x releases.  This also
may be related to the memory controller byusmaster problems benh has
been workign on lately.  His patches seem to fix a number of
mysterious lockups in the radeon driver.
