mmmh ... does not seem to be a thinkpad-specific problem ;)
Look in ubuntuforums.org for this kind of help, it is faster.
Anyway, have you tried dedicated services like gnump3d for 
media-serving. I personnaly prefer it over samba (which is pretty broken 
in breezy by the way).
